Luxury Caribbean Holidays / Antigua

Watch video

A distinct British flair seamlessly blends with the Caribbean way of life on a luxury holiday in glamorous Antigua, where golden beaches tempt relaxation, coral-filled waters urge exploration and colourful historic towns invite discovery.

Relatively unspoiled and exuding a relaxed, West Indian charm, Antigua is every inch your typical Caribbean island – supposedly with a beach for everyday of the year. However, delve beyond its palm-fringed exterior and you’ll discover a unique British colonial heritage, still living and breathing through the island’s love of two treasured sports – cricket and sailing.

Beyond the yacht-lined harbours, Antigua boasts some of the most romantic and secluded beachfront hotels in the Caribbean, including Galley Bay Resort, overlooking the ombré shorelines of oyster white and azure blue. In our opinion, one of the most beautiful beaches in Antigua is Half Moon Bay, framed with a luscious crescent of flourishing flora, whilst the most tranquil of sugar-sand beaches can be found in the south-west of the island.

The sights become more dramatic beneath the ocean waters, where exotic coral reefs and abandoned shipwrecks are waiting to be explored; head to Green Island off the east coast for one of the best snorkelling experiences in Antigua. From natural to manmade beauty, Antigua’s main towns and cities are steeped in rich history and culture. A colourful carnival spirit suffuses the air in English Harbour, where locals and visitors alike head to Shirley Heights to savour rum punch, dance to the rhythm of steel pans and witness the sun setting behind distant Montserrat.

In capital city St. John’s, step back in time and explore the 18th Century ruins and grounds of Fort James, before relishing in the views over St. John’s Harbour. Antigua’s sister island Barbuda beckons with its pink-tinged sands, thriving ecosystems of wildlife and undeveloped expanses; you’re more likely to encounter wildfowl than fellow explorers or residents. Take the short helicopter or boat transfer from Antigua and make the most of these two contrasting islands on your luxury Caribbean holiday.

When to visit Antigua

A year round destination, the best months to visit Antigua are generally during the drier winter months of December to April with temperatures averaging 24°C. The summer months between May and November can be more humid with showers and passing tropical storms a possibility, however visitors during these months may be rewarded with quieter beaches and excellent hotel offers.

Top 5 things to do in Antigua

  • Discover the island's unique heritage with a visit to the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda, Antigua's oldest building built in 1747
  • Take the short journey to Barbuda to witness the sheer beauty of the red-throated frigate birds flocking at their sanctuary in Codrington Lagoon
  • Captivate the senses at the bustling Saturday market in St. John's, where fresh fruits, fragrant herbs and local crafts line the stalls
  • Savour a romantic candlelit dinner high up on The Inn at English Harbour's hilltop terrace or for a less formal occasional, try a local speciality anywhere across the island - hearty pepperpot, Wadadli beer or the extra-sweet Antiguan black pineapple
  • Cheer on the sailors racing at the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta or during Antigua Sailing Week, which both take place between April and May each year; expect barbecues, rum punches and plenty of joviality
