Cusco, Peru
Begin in Cusco, Peru, where the worlds of ancient Incas and colonial Spaniards entwine within the city; your base will be Belmond Palacio Nazarenas. Board the Hiram Bingham train to begin your journey in the explorer’s shoes through the Sacred Valley to the constructional marvel of Machu Picchu, the Inca citadel remains discovered only a mere 100 years ago. For those seeking a more untouched part of Peru, an alternative trip to the north coast uncovers archaeological riches within the Moche temples of Trujillo and local fishing and horseback riding allow for complete immersion into traditional Peruvian culture.

Easter Island, Chile
Roam with wild horses over lush hillocks to discover the mysterious heads of the moai carved by the Rapa Nui people of Easter Island. The customs of the island’s native tribes can be explored at the ceremonial village of Orongo, home of the prestigious yet treacherous Birdman competition, and the sanctified site of Ahu Akivi where seven identical moai stand to face the sunset of the spring equinox. A spectacular performance of traditional costumed dance proceeds a night spent close to the island’s natural beauty within the organic cypress log columns and volcanic rock structure of the Hangaroa Eco Village & Spa.

Apia, Samoa
To the north east of Australia lies a small island paradise, where Polynesian culture is rich and waterfalls cascade into the azure water. Despite many efforts by western missionaries, the Fa’a Samoa, translated to ‘the Samoan way’, has retained its grasp on this archipelago. A chance to attend a Samoan Women’s Committee allows for an in depth view of island life followed by a tour of Vailima, the former residence of Treasure Island author Robert Louis Stevenson. A night of vivacious fire dance performance poolside within the Sheraton Samoa Beach Resort ends the day at the hotel’s Fiafia feast.
