Menorca, Spain / Torralbenc

Deep in the heart of the countryside surrounded by blankets of vineyards lies a place to escape; a rural retreat to get immersed into Menorca’s slow pace – this is Torralbenc.

Formerly a 19-20th century farmhouse, this middle-of-nowhere-hideaway was renovated by Antonio Esteva to become Menorca’s first luxury boutique hotel. With 30 rustic-meets-plush rooms camouflaged from the world and luxury-agritourism in its bones, its thoughtful design centres around preserving the surrounding environment and archaeological heritage. The personalised and unpretentious takes priority over frivolities here, making the vibe unassuming with the warmth of home. And despite its private and peaceful location, Torralbenc is surprisingly easy to get to. A short flight and 15 minute transfer ends in being greeted by rosemary aromas in white-washed limestone villas and sipping a glass of homemade wine in the gardens in no time at all.

There’s splendidly little going on around these parts, so it’s the perfect place for grown-ups to just stop and be present in the tranquillity of the moment. It's here that couples while away hours in the company of one another making the most of the area; from a slice of zen in exclusive yoga classes or guided horseback excursions on the famous Camí de Cavalls, to sampling the local ingredients in their award-winning restaurant (it’s popular with the outside guests, so get that table booked). If breaching the peace must be done, there’s no better base for exploring the island. A self-drive tour is our favourite way of winding through the rolling hills, while a 20 minute bike ride reveals the nearest beach and marine life encounters aboard their traditional Llaut boat.

Mainland Spain’s climate varies from temperate in the north to dry and hot in the south. Spring and autumn are pleasant and warm whereas July and August are hot, particularly inland. In Mallorca sunshine and warm temperatures are the norm from April to October with the cooling influence of the sea preventing excessive temperatures during the peak summer months, winters are mild and dry with occasional showers.
