St Barths / Eden Rock

With a past steeped in Hollywood’s golden age and a clever continuation of what went before, this island icon’s reputation is strong enough to endure any storm.

When hurricane Irma hit St Barths in 2017, island institution Eden Rock was hit hard with the resulting devastation causing a two year closure. Still, the storm gave its owners the opportunity to refurbish and expand on the foundations created by original owner Rémy de Haenen, when he built it in the 1950s. Now this family-owned retreat has reclaimed its place atop St Barths’ must-stay list once more and is welcoming its A-list clientele back with open arms.

A sense of place

Perched atop a rocky cape and overlooking a perfectly proportioned beach, Eden Rock’s location is a gamble that paid off; Haenen’s risky move to purchase somewhere so seemingly inhospitable resulted in the creation of perhaps the most dramatically positioned hotel on the island complete with uninterrupted views. Decades later and under new ownership, this quirky attitude remains with an owner and manager who moonlights as the hotel’s artist in residence.

In pursuit of…

…the best social scene on St Barths. Those in the know widely consider this to be the de facto social hub of the island, yet what else is to be expected of a place that quickly garnered popularity in the golden age of Hollywood among the likes of Greta Garbo and Howard Hughes, and eventually with the Rockefellers and Rothschilds once news travelled east and they caught wind of its popularity. The jet set mostly gather at Rémy Bar and Salon – so named as a special homage to the founder.

Wake up here

As well as hosting dedicated art exhibitions, most walls are used as gallery spaces and the E Rock Art Collection numbers around 400 pieces. As part of the renovation, rooms were overhauled to better reflect the hotel’s origins; mid-century furniture offers a 50s feel, while colourful couches and the gallery walls smattered with eclectic, quirky artwork are a bright modern addition that maintains its relevancy. For 360 degree views, there’s of course the Howard Hughes Suite; a study in rich timber, this lofty space sits at the highest point of Eden Rock.

On location

Newly added Eden Spa inside the top of the rock takes on a yacht-on-land mood in its waiting room; a calm place where blissed-out guests breeze in and out of its doors. Therapy rooms are discreet cabins where treatments using patented HydraFacial technology and Ligne St Barth products champion the use of natural ingredients while supporting a local brand. Want to be closer to the ocean? There’s always the beachfront Sun Spa by Esthederm, with dedicated treatments for before and after sun exposure.

A Carrier curation

Special occasions are our speciality and for the ultimate swanky gathering, we know just the place. Designed with decadence in mind, the three ultra-plush villas that flank the main residence set a new standard for island luxury living and make an ideal backdrop for any celebration. While all have their own unique style, most notable of the three is Rockstar Villa – a posh playground with an illustrious history that includes celebrity New Year’s Eve parties and Grammy-winning artists recording in the on-site studio.

When to visit St Barths

St Barths has a pleasant tropical climate with temperatures averaging 26°C, usually tempered by cooling trade winds. January to April are the most popular months to visit, characterised by warm, generally dry days, whilst the summer months between June and November tend to be more humid, with regular showers and the possibility of tropical storms. Visitors during these months will often benefit from quieter beaches and excellent offers.
