Koh Yao Noi / Six Senses Yao Noi

Fronting Phang Nga Bay, easily one of the world’s most surreal seascapes, this is a place that is unfailingly flawless when it comes to mellowed island discovery.

Mix friendly island locals, a brand dedicated to authenticity, traditional Thai thatched bamboo villas and humbling views of limestone pinnacles, and you have the conscious, rustic essence of Six Senses Yao Noi. A small but mighty institution of intrinsically incorporated villas clinging to the rocks, its widespread social and environmental impact means it feels almost impossible to envisage the island without its presence.

A sense of place

Location was definitely on the brain when Six Senses Yao Noi was designed. An alluring untouched island mid-way between Phuket and Krabi, no matter where you are at here it feels as though a glimpse of Phang Nga’s foliage-crowned edifices are always around the corner. Jutting out across the horizon, their mesmerising configurations are all you’re able to focus on during the 45 minute speedboat journey to the island (and the rest of your stay).

In pursuit of…

…community spirit. This is a place that cares, not just about the environment or wildlife on the island (that too, Six Senses are responsible for restoring Koh Yao Noi’s population of rare hornbills), but about those who call it home. Local wellness concerns, educational funding and growing businesses are consistently taken into consideration here. Favouring artisans, farmers, fishermen and suppliers who live nearby, an on-site carpentry workshop employs 16 school leavers, while the hotel’s pastry chef is a local who has been serving up his creations for more than a decade.

"This is a place that cares, not just about the environment or wildlife on the island, but about those who call it home."

Wake up here

There’s an elegance born of simplicity in the rooms. From the carefully considered open-plan indoor/outdoor living linked by wood walkways that wind through the foliage, over ponds, and around waterfalls; to the unique pieces of furniture that pepper the interiors (made on-site in the carpentry with locally harvested timber of course), everything here has a purpose. The thatched roof and sturdy stilts make each room feel like a fantastical grown-up tree house. While all villas benefit from a sunrise-facing advantage, the best are found, unsurprisingly, at The View. Not that you would know from the sheer size of it, but this is a residence made for just two, where 360˚ panoramas over one of the world’s most iconic bays come together with a private cinema, bedroom waterfall and pool shack.

On location

When a front-and-centre commitment to eco-consciousness transcends to an environmental passion, there’s few things left to do but shout about it, which Six Senses does in the form of their Earth Lab. The secret to Yao Noi’s sustainability credentials, it is equipped with on-site glass crushing and recycling, candle making from leftover wax, composting and water filtration, so the hotel’s zero-waste-future feels more tangible each visit.

A Carrier curation

With all Thailand’s islands have to offer, there’s always an excuse to go and explore something; thankfully, design-your-own cruises mean no more sacrificing any must-see sights in favour of others. And, with a dedicated captain at the helm of a luxury speedboat, few spots are off limits; follow in 007’s footsteps visiting the filming location for The Man with the Golden Gun or simply drop anchor wherever the impulse strikes and swim in the warm open water.
