Maldives / Huvafen Fushi

A long-time Maldives favourite, and for good reason; Huvafen Fushi does island escapology well.

So much so that it is consistently voted one of the best island paradises in the world, mostly due to its ridiculously beautiful beaches and delectable dining options. A barefoot paradise set within its own lagoon, Huvafen Fushi is sensitively developed to sustain the island’s unique ecosystems. Accommodation here is provided in enchanting contemporary bungalows and pavilions, all air-conditioned, with seven foot square beds, Frette linen and their own private oasis with a freshwater pool. Step directly from your deck onto the sand, or choose an Ocean or Lagoon Bungalow for the luxury of slipping straight into the crystal water.

Dining outlets include the luxe-but-laid-back Celsius with its white sand floored deck and modern Japanese cuisine with a flirtatious Latin twist at SALT. In the Huvafen spa, Pearl, the world’s first underwater treatment rooms are the setting for deeply reviving therapies. A dedicated ‘Thakuru’ butler is on hand to ensure no wish goes unfulfilled. Sporting and relaxation opportunities abound. Swim in the fibre-optic lit infinity pool or relax in the Lonu Veyo outdoor salt water flotation pool, enjoy watersports and PADI-certified scuba diving, join a sunset fishing trip or simply snorkel around the sandbanks. Expeditions with the resident marine biologist are also available, while the kids' club is on hand to entertain little ones while grown-ups have some me-time.

Sub-aquatic spa

Across the Indian Ocean, Huvafen Fushi is renowned for blazing a trail when it comes to architecture and design. Not least in Pearl, the Huvafen Spa - the setting for the world's first underwater treatment space - where the signature rooms provide a uniquely surreal setting for treatments. The James Bond-esque Ocean Pavilions look out to miles of cerulean waters and boast a fibre-optic lit infinity pool, blending seamlessly with the horizon; but the pièce de résistance is the infinity edge Kohler bath that fills from the ceiling. Contemporary design at its most alluring.

A dining destination par excellence

Enjoy relaxed dining with your feet in the sand at Celsius, or modern Japanese fare with a twist over the water at SALT. Mediterranean comfort food is found in the form of wood-fired pizzas at Forno, fresh salads and detox juices can be sampled at RAW Cafe and Vinu - a subterranean wine cellar - is popular with oenophiles. For a more relaxed dining vibe, UMBar’s handcrafted cocktails and savoury snacks are served up while you lounge on the oversized cushions on the white-sand beach.

Expert spa partners

Renowned skincare expert, Teresa Tarmey, has unveiled a residency at Huvafen Fushi, home of the world’s only underwater spa. Guests are now able to experience Teresa Tarmey’s celebrated Signature Facial in the opulent treatment rooms set in the lagoon, eight metres deep in the Indian Ocean.

Relaxing in the Huvafen Pearl Spa means doing so at the hands of the some of the best trained therapists in the world. Each an expert on ancient massage tradition and modern techniques, Pearl Spa therapists have undergone intensive training with acclaimed massage expert, Beata Aleksandrowicz, to learn a unique style that combines deep tissue and trigger-point techniques and touch therapy.

Resident marine biologist

Spot whale sharks, create new coral colonies and accompany the marine biologist on a Manta ID trip where you will learn how to identify these creatures by their bellies, that act as fingerprints. Find a manta that hasn't been ID'd and you can name it.

When is the best time to visit Maldives?

The Maldives has a hot, tropical climate with sunshine all year round. The most popular months to visit are between November and April during the north-east monsoon when it is dry with very little wind. Whilst there may be rain during some of the summer months, with ever-changing weather patterns and excellent offers, this is becoming an increasingly popular time to travel.
