Costa del Sol / Finca Cortesin

Say hello to seclusion

Carrier’s top pick for taking time out and going off-grid in 2022

A handsome hacienda situated in the foothills of the Casares mountains, this boutique retreat could easily be mistaken for a long-established Andalusían village.

Despite toting 67 room keys, an air of independence and space is never in short supply at Finca Cortesin. A place of whitewashed walls and red clay tiles, there is something distinctly Spanish about this well-established yet relatively young addition to the Malaga coast. A region boasting toasty temperatures well into the winter, this is where those in the know come to escape the cold in favour of warm, sun-soaked days of ease.

A sense of place

A melting pot of design influences, Finca Cortesin is a heady product of its location. Wisteria-lined pathways wind through Moorish arches to arrive at wood-carved doors salvaged and restored from Portuguese monasteries. Meanwhile, inside, Moroccan-inspired courtyards are resplendent with bold prints and craning palm fronds that gently graze the shoulders of the discerning guests as they stroll past. Its position also means it’s easy to give up a day or two exploring a little further afield. To the north, there’s the only authorised tour to explore dunes, beaches, marshes and forests of Doñana National Park, or south to the British overseas territory of Gibraltar, or even further southward to Tangier, the gateway to Africa.

In pursuit of…

…an exclusive ambience and unapologetic ease. There’s a sophistication and elegance here that makes you feel good just being there. A pocket of Andalucía where desires are met before even being voiced, this is a place dedicated to delivering a certain kind of relaxation that’s rooted in the impeccably high standards of its attentive staff. Resident personal trainer and former tennis coach from the ATP circuit, Javier Contreras, is just one of them, and offers personalised fitness programmes based on individuals and their goals.

"Moroccan-inspired courtyards are resplendent with bold prints and craning palm fronds that gently graze guests’ shoulders as they stroll past."

Wake up here

It goes without saying that suites here are spacious. With plenty to choose from, splendid views are guaranteed from every room. Similarly to the main spaces, the suites are bathed in neutral hues while uniquely patterned, bold curtains add a splash of Finca’s fun-loving spirit. For an authentic flavour of Andalusían living (of course without sacrificing on the elevated standards) look no further than the resort’s two private villas which play host to lush gardens, private pools and boho living spaces where families congregate for board games.

On location

Frequently listed as one of the top golfing spots in Spain and host to high profile events, it would be remiss to neglect mentioning the manicured fairways of Finca’s championship golf course. Novice golfers and seasoned aficionados spend mornings at the Jack Nicklaus Academy refining their technique before heading out to the first tee for a relaxed late afternoon round, that ends with dinner at REI – an intimate restaurant where delicate dishes fuse Japanese techniques with a melting pot of global influences.

A Carrier curation

A stay in this region wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Ronda. One of Spain’s oldest cities, its unusual geography leaves it divided in two and perched on the edge of a cliff overlooking the gorge of Guadalevin River. The three bridges that connect Ronda are dramatic feats of engineering. Carved into the craggy rock face, these smooth, stone structures seem to defy all reason yet remain a steadfast spectacle. History can be further explored with a private guide at UNESCO World Heritage sites, The Alhambra and the Albaycín of Granada, a two hour chauffeured ride away.

When to visit Spain

Mainland Spain’s climate varies from temperate in the north to dry and hot in the south. Spring and autumn are pleasant and warm whereas July and August are hot, particularly inland. In Mallorca sunshine and warm temperatures are the norm from April to October with the cooling influence of the sea preventing excessive temperatures during the peak summer months, winters are mild and dry with occasional showers. Tenerife and Gran Canaria are year-round destinations, the climate being constantly warm for most of the year with July and August being hot.
