South Africa / Tswalu Kalahari Reserve

Watch video

South Africa’s largest private game reserve offers, without doubt, a unique experience, set against the backdrop of the Korannaberg mountains and surrounded by endless rolling dunes and red Kalahari sands.

Here guests may encounter colonies of meerkats, enjoy a horseback safari across the plains or marvel at the sheer size of the Kalahari black-maned lions – with a maximum of 10 vehicles on the malaria-free reserve, an uninterrupted experience is assured. As well as zebra, buffalo, lion, giraffe and cheetah, the pristine wilderness plays host to some rarer species such as roan, sable or tsessebe antelope, or enjoy the thrill of tracking the desert black rhino on foot. The reserve is regarded as one of the best places in the world to spot an aardvark or pangolin-these shy, nocturnal creatures are rarely seen but the cold Kalahari winter nights mean that they are occasionally spotted outside in daylight hours. Bush walks to sites of ancient San rock art, horseback rides and sundowners on the dunes are followed by gourmet meals at the lodges.

When to visit South Africa

A year round destination, but expect cooler weather in the Eastern and Western Capes during winter, between June and August. Mpumalanga stays warm year round with temperatures, humidity and rainfall all increasing in the summer months between October and March. The whales return to the waters around Hermanus from July to November, and the spring months of August and September are particularly colourful along the Garden Route.

The prime time for game viewing is generally the drier winter and spring months from April to September when animals frequent the waterholes. During the wetter summer months between October and March, animals can still be viewed but are more widely dispersed – from December to February there may be more sightings of newborn animals.
