Kenya / Lengishu

Say hello to adventure

Carrier’s top pick for indulging your adventurous spirit in 2022

A conservationists dream sits within the six exclusive-use rooms in Lengishu's four cottages; where the local staff are like old friends and the rhinos from the most successful sanctuary in the region are your neighbours.

There’s no prize for guessing the heritage of the owners of this family home – the tartan accents see to that. But while the Scottish roots are apparent, the splashes of red and geometric marry them with the culture of the local Maasai community. The Borana Conservancy – that aims to be carbon neutral by 2024 – is where Lengishu sits, welcoming up to a dozen guests to share in the surrounding 32,000 acres. You’re never short of things to do; horseback safaris, tours of Pride Rock (yes, Simba’s Pride Rock) and assisting a ranger checking up on both the black and white rhinos living in the sanctuary fill the schedule. But if you ask us, time here isn’t complete without accompanying Nissa, one of only 59 Silver guides in Kenya with over 20 years’ experience, on a trek that proudly shows off the natural beauty of his homeland.

When to visit Kenya

January to March is hot and dry with the long rains usually falling from April to early June. Between June and October it is warm and dry during the day but cold at night. The migration usually arrives in the Mara from July with river crossings from Tanzania generally taking place between July and September. The herds rest in Kenya before crossing back to Tanzania in October/November. Kenya’s coast enjoys a tropical climate – April to June can be humid, tempered by monsoon winds. Nairobi is pleasant year round due to its altitude.
