Botswana / Xigera Safari Lodge

Say hello to adventure

Carrier’s top pick for indulging your adventurous spirit in 2022

Re-emerging onto the safari scene with a luxurious new look worthy of its prestigious status, the pioneering Xigera has not only outdone itself, but changed the game for luxury lodges.

The legacy of the Tollman family, Xigera’s façade may have transformed, but this makeover certainly hasn’t tainted the incomparable and generous service ingrained in its foundations. The loyal team of over 100 aim for the stars that are oh-so visible around these parts to make every second spent here bespoke for the guests that grace the grounds – a mere 24 at maximum capacity. Unlike others, this lodge thrives off spontaneity and surprise; from the ever-changing dining options to the totally flexible game drives tailored to specific interests. As Xigera is a family affair, it’s no surprise when the managing director himself shows up in a jeep. You’re in good hands though, not just a hotelier but a Wildlife & Conservation expert too, he’s ready to put his 40-years-plus guiding and hosting experience to good use. And if the safari-connoisseurs still need a wow, there’s always the glass bottom mokoros. Exclusive to the lodge and based on the traditional canoes of locals, they give a new perspective on what goes on below the surface of the Okavango Delta’s waterways.

But hospitality and animal hotspots aren’t the only things on the brain here, it’s all about indigenous artwork too. With the largest collection of African designs in the world, this bold and quirky number celebrates its creative heritage with handcrafted pieces inspired by the landscape throughout the lodge and the 12 uniquely designed rooms. Including its own work of art, the Baobab Treehouse – a three-storey strikingly sculptural rooftop sleep-out inspired by the famous Pierneef painting. Where a night even further off-grid starts with sipping sundowners before falling asleep to the nocturnal orchestra outside.

When to visit Botswana

The best time to visit Botswana for game viewing in the delta areas is during the dry winter season from April to October when animals are drawn to water sources. Days are warm and sunny although nights can drop below freezing – in October temperatures can be particularly hot. The Okavango area tends to be more moderate than the Kalahari where seasonal differences are more extreme and activities vary according to wet (November – March) and dry (April – October) seasons.
