Mauritius / One&Only Le Saint Géran

Watch video

With a location that none can match and thoughtful, warm staff who instantly make you feel at home, it’s no wonder this Mauritian icon has garnered its cult-like following.

Originally a hedonist hotspot for Hollywood stars of the 70s looking to hide away in the tropics, One&Only Le Saint Géran’s décor and clientele may have changed over the years but its popularity endures. An institution where staff are as loyal as its guests (receptionist Preetham has worked here since the hotel’s opening in 1975 and greets guests like old friends – which many of them are), Mauritius’ oldest luxury hotel isn’t somewhere guests forget easily.

A sense of place

The country’s appeal lies beyond its many picturesque beaches and flashy resorts, something Le Saint Géran is wise to realise. Securing the most sheltered and glamorous spot, their location is excellent. While in the west, classic views of the seemingly endless Indian Ocean fulfil any castaway cravings, it is the sugar cane-coated mountains of the east and the nearby local market that makes this a truly Mauritian affair.

In pursuit of...

…a new favourite. There’s a reason why over half the guests here have stayed before, the attentive service of dedicated staff inspires a rare loyalty in visitors that is found few places in the world. With each department outfitted with someone who has over 30 years’ experience at the hotel, it exudes an air of homely familiarity that garners a devotion in guests and, in  some cases, prompts them to return nearly 100 times.

"An institution where staff are as loyal as its guests, Mauritius’ oldest luxury hotel isn’t somewhere guests forget easily."

Beyond family-friendly

The combination of long-haul escapism with minimal jet lag makes Mauritius perennially popular among families; and despite once being synonymous with couples, Le Saint Géran is now home to some of the most coveted kids’ activities on the island – think three year olds waterskiing on an inflatable aquaplane. Multi-generational families arrive comfortable in the knowledge that all will be entertained by the endless distractions that call this place home.

On location

Surrounded by lush vegetation, the recently refreshed spa is now a destination in its own right. Complete with private gardens, immersive outdoor showers and an adults-only pool, after a day spent blissfully lounging on one of the oversized daybeds between bespoke treatments, returning to the real world will seem near impossible.

Wake up here

Ensuring nothing detracts from the surrounding natural beauty, rooms here are elegantly pared back, swathed in creamy neutrals and only offset with the occasional blues and greys. However, it’s at Villa One where island living is most stylish. A uniquely designed two-bedroom private villa complete with direct beach access and a dedicated butler, this may be the most exclusive address in this region and it’s ready and raring to wow.

A Carrier curation

Cruising the Indian Ocean on Lady Elizabeth – a 1950s yacht that served as Her Majesty’s private tender on the island – is a truly regal way to discover Mauritius. An expedition around the lagoon starts with a toes-in-the-sand breakfast, breaks for snorkelling and a champagne lunch on a private beach, before ending with a decadent dinner on board as the sun sets.

When to visit Mauritius

Mauritius is a year round destination and experiences a warm subtropical climate, with relatively little seasonal variation in temperatures year round. May to October is dry with comfortable temperatures ranging between 18°C and 24°C with cooling tradewinds coming in from the southeast. Visitors during these dates will often benefit from excellent offers from the hotels. November to April is much warmer and humid with average temperatures ranging between 25°C to 33°C with an increase in rainfall. January and February tend to be the wettest months with the possibility of tropical storms although this is a rarity.
