South Africa / Tinga Lodge at Lion Sands Private Game Reserve

The highest concentration of black rhino in South Africa draws many wildlife lovers to this private concession within the famed Kruger National Park – the only such concession with access to both the Sabie and Sand rivers.

Tracking leopard on foot is another huge draw, with guided river walks bringing the chance to watch hippo at close quarters. Game drives in open safari vehicles leave morning and evening, with safari lunches and bush dinners to add to the experience. Tinga’s nine suites are beautifully decked out in earthy tones, each having a bath and shower, lounge, deck and private plunge pool. Enjoy wildlife lectures, local villages visits and wellness treatments followed, if you choose, by the unforgettable opportunity to spend the night in one of the Lion Sands’ tree houses. Children over six years are welcome.

When to visit South Africa

A year round destination, but expect cooler weather in the Eastern and Western Capes during winter, between June and August. Mpumalanga stays warm year round with temperatures, humidity and rainfall all increasing in the summer months between October and March. The whales return to the waters around Hermanus from July to November, and the spring months of August and September are particularly colourful along the Garden Route.

The prime time for game viewing is generally the drier winter and spring months from April to September when animals frequent the waterholes. During the wetter summer months between October and March, animals can still be viewed but are more widely dispersed – from December to February there may be more sightings of newborn animals.
