Kenya / Elewana Lewa Safari Camp

Having been the Craig family home since 1924 there’s a hospitable air to this exclusive retreat offering privileged access to 65,000 acres of private protected wilderness in the midst of the famous Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.

Thirteen spacious safari tents including two family tents have large bedrooms with en suite facilities, the private verandas looking onto landscaped gardens towards the Laikipia Plains. A favoured haunt of royalty and photographers the camp has an attractive restaurant known for its premium wine list, with picnic lunches that can be enjoyed in any number of stunning beauty spots. The setting, within one of Kenya’s major private conservation successes, brings opportunities to view black and white rhino, fabulous bird life and one of the world’s largest concentrations of Grevy’s zebra. Dip in the swimming pool after the day’s safariing, including game drives and walks with trained wildlife rangers. Horse rides and adventures on camelback are popular; a day trip to the Ngare Ndare forest features swimming in crystal-clear mountain springs and crossing a canopy bridge high above the forest.

When to visit Kenya

January to March is hot and dry with the long rains usually falling from April to early June. Between June and October it is warm and dry during the day but cold at night. The migration usually arrives in the Mara from July with river crossings from Tanzania generally taking place between July and September. The herds rest in Kenya before crossing back to Tanzania in October/November. Kenya’s coast enjoys a tropical climate – April to June can be humid, tempered by monsoon winds. Nairobi is pleasant year round due to its altitude.
