Maldives / Velaa Private Island Maldives

A 45-minute seaplane flight north of Malé is the far-flung, turtle-shaped Velaa Private Island.

Swoop down over sparkling turquoise waters to your very own slice of paradise, home to outstanding food, a 6,000-bottle wine tower and a divine Clarins Spa.

Retreat to an enclave that takes luxury to new levels – the name Velaa taken from the local sea turtles. From the air the island forms the turtle’s body, while the head comprises a collection of dream-like overwater villas which feature a private pool and steps leading down to the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Villas and residences alike offer generous terraces and shady gazebos, the light-filled interiors being sumptuously furnished for maximum comfort. For those seeking ultimate privacy there’s a romantic pool residence, accessible only by boat, which comes complete with small gym, spa room and sundeck. Dine exactly how you please – Athiri being a divine beachfront destination while the Avi pool bar turns into a convivial cocktail bar by night. Aragu has a vintage champagne lounge; Tavaru houses a Teppanyaki kitchen and a wine cellar – the quite extraordinary three storey wine tower home to over 6,000 wines. While the youngsters are off exploring with the kids’ club, head for the Clarins Spa with its snow room and relaxation pods, play nine holes designed by Jose Maria Olazabal or leave the world in your wake with a splash of watersports from jet skis to catamarans.

The Golf Academy prides itself on tailoring golf lessons to the individual and the resident Velaa Private Island professionals are fully PGA qualified.

When is the best time to visit Maldives?

The Maldives has a hot, tropical climate with sunshine all year round. The most popular months to visit are between November and April during the north-east monsoon when it is dry with very little wind. Whilst there may be rain during some of the summer months, with ever-changing weather patterns and excellent offers, this is becoming an increasingly popular time to travel.
